Before La Scala opened, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples—envisioned by the Bourbon monarchy in 1737—was considered Italy’s grandest opera house. Tragically, much of architect Giovanni Antonio Medrano’s gorgeous work was destroyed in an 1816 fire. After an extensive rehab by Antonio Niccolini, the scarlet-and-gold shrine was bedecked with drawings, a celestial ceiling painting, and a clever revolving clock in the vault of the proscenium arch.

Its isolated location, on a patch of land jutting into the harbor, makes the Sydney Opera House, which opened in 1973, all the more visually compelling. Visionary Danish architect Jørn Utzon was the man responsible for this iconic building, with its mesmerizing nexus of interlocking vaulted roof shells sheathed in glazed off-white tiles. The reception hall, named the Utzon Room in honor of the late architect, melds original concrete beams with one of his own wall-length tapestries.

Home to the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, the Oslo Opera House is a contemporary marvel dreamed up by local firm Snøhetta. Set on the city's revitalized harbor, the cool white building has a sloping roof and a curvilinear lobby wall, allowing for dreamy fjord views. Like the opera houses of yesteryear, the Main Hall is horseshoe shaped but buoyed by bold, edgy features, including an LED-lit glass chandelier and Pae White’s 3-D-like curtain based on an image of crumpled aluminum foil.

Teatro Colón was intended for completion in 1892, but it was not until 1908 that it was finished, christened by a performance of Verdi’s Aïda. A number of architects—Francesco Tamburini, Victor Meano, Jules Dormal, and later in the 1960s, Mario Roberto Álvarez—all lent their savvy to the space, making for an eclectic, 20th-century look. The restored, hand-painted dome is a highlight, as is the curved orchestra pit, both of which contribute to the hall’s vastly adept acoustics.
