Marsha P. Johnson (born Malcolm Johnson) was one of the well known drag queens who led the fight for gay rights during the Stonewall Riots of 1969. After the success of the rebellion, Marsha P. Johnson and her friends formed S.T.A.R. – Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries.

Much of our photographic history has been purposely destroyed. Since most of the men and women in these photos are unknown, it's pretty much impossible to tell it they were a gay couple or just "good friends." Most photographs of gay couples were eventually destroyed by horrified family members. For every photo that I may have mistakenly identified as gay, thousands more were burned or torn into pieces to keep a family secret and keep us out of sight.
