Toulouse - Basilique St. SerninConstruction on the present Romanesque church began around 1080, starting with the chevet and transept at the east end. A surviving inscription tells us that the altar was consecrated by Pope Urban II on May 24, 1096. Work continued on the nave until about 1117, when the collegiate church was elevated to the status of an abbey and attention shifted to the cloister and necessary monastic buildings. The west end was never completed.
Spiral columns in Ravello cathedral. These spiral columns, decorated with mosaics, support the Pulpit of the Gospels in the Duomo of Ravello (near Amalfi, Italy). The pulpit was created in 1272 by Nicolo di Bartolomeo.
I like the rounded crosses used in Gothic architecture. I also like the multiple columns on each side used to frame an entranceway. I'm not sure what I prefer (a perfectly rounded doorway or one that comes to a point like this one).
