They knew as early as 2000 BC, the Luni-solar year with a leap-year rule because of the lunar nodes. Origins can't be certain, but can be traced back to well before Christ's birth. This ancient Chinese chronicles are still considered reliable and relatively complete - also vouched for by the officials because they paid for results with their lives.
