This is Frederick Henry (1584 – 1647), one of the ancestors of our new king. He was Prince of Orange and son of  King William the Silent and Louise de Coligny. Frederick Henry was trained to arms by his elder brother Maurice, one of the finest generals of his age.  In 1603 Frederick Henry became General of the States Cavalry at the age of not yet twenty! As the leading soldier in the Dutch wars against Spain, his main achievement was the successful Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629…

Antique velvet saddle cloth / Caparison    A saddle cloth of blue-green silk velvet.   It is embroidered with a white metal thread in floral designs. Once it would also have been decorated with gold or silver braid - this has been removed long ago. I have been told that this dates from the seventeenth century.
