On the corner of and Cary Street in Richmond Va. Was once an old abandoned tobacco warehouse.

In January 1945, Alma May Billings, a 22-year-old streetcar operator for the Virginia Transit Co., modeled one of the new uniforms that had been procured to end a long controversy about what the women should wear. The uniforms were gray with dubonnet trim. Drawn up by stylists for the Virginia Electric and Power Co., the uniforms initially carried a Vepco insignia, but it was soon replaced with a VTC emblem. Students protest busing plan -  percentage of white students in Richmond city schools declined from 45 to 21 percent between 1960  1975. This "white flight" prevented Richmond schools from becoming truly integrated. After voter referendum to combine suburban school districts of Chesterfield  Henrico with city of Richmond's failed, Federal District Judge Robert Mehrige ordered merger by judicial action (busing to achieve racial balance in the schools) | Valentine Richmond History Center.

Aside from nurses, the WACs were the first women to serve in the Army, and other military branches had similar groups that formed during World War II. The organization was officially disbanded as a women’s branch in 1978, with all members folding into full…
