Anatoli Nikoliavich Boukreev, Russian: Анато́лий Никола́евич Букре́ев, (January 16, 1958 – December 25, 1997) was a Kazakhstani (USSR/Kazakhstan) climber who made ascents of seven of the 8,000 metre peaks without supplemental oxygen. In total he made 18 successful ascents on peaks above 8000 m (1989 – 1997). Boukreev was lost under an avalanche on Annapurna. The direct transliteration of his Russian name is Anatolij Nikolaevich Bukreev.

New Zealand mountain climber and Mt Everest expedition leader whose last climb up Everest in 1996 is told in Jon Krakauer's excellent book Into Thin Air.

George Mallory (18 June 1886 – 8 or 9 June 1924). During the 1924 British Mount Everest Expedition, Mallory and Andrew "Sandy" Irvine (on the left) disappeared somewhere high on Everest's North-East ridge. The pair's last known sighting was only about 800 vertical feet from the summit. Mallory's fate was unknown for 75 years, until his body was discovered on 1 May 1999. Whether Mallory and Irvine reached the summit before they died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research.
