I Mayas værker etableres et univers, hvor psykiske tilstande er omformet til faste materialer. Med udstillingen "De inderste rum" fra 2009 ønskede hun at undersøge begrebet diagnose: ”Jeg ville rumliggøre psykiske tilstande, så de fremstår som noget, man har skrællet af sig og selv kan tage på sig. Jeg undersøger, hvordan man betragter sig selv, når man får en diagnose, hvordan man tager identiteten på sig”.
