Rogneda of Polotsk, Vladimir I of Kiev and Izyaslav of Polotsk

Anglo-Scandinavian coin of Eric Bloodaxe. The legend reads “ERIC REX” (King Eric) (at British Museum). From A.D 866 to A.D 954, York was part of a Viking kingdom, ruled mainly by descendants of Ragnar Lothbrok. The city seems to have been the capital of the Viking kingdom from which power was exercised. Our knowledge of the kingdom comes mainly from adversaries such as the kings of Wessex, who ultimately created the ‘Kingdom of England’.
