E-boats (German: Schnellboot, or S-Boot, meaning "fast boat") was the designation for fast attack craft of the Kriegsmarine during World War II. The S-boat was a very fast vessel, able to cruise at 40 or 50 knots, It was better suited to the open sea and had substantially longer range (approximately 700 nautical miles) than the American PT boat and the British Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB). As a result, the Royal Navy later developed better matched versions of MTBs using the Fairmile 'D' hull…

E-boat (German: Schnellboot, or S-Boot, meaning "fast boat") was the Western Allies designation for fast attack craft of the Kriegsmarine during World War II. It is commonly held that the British used the term E for Enemy. The E-boat was a very fast vessel, able to cruise at 40 or 50 knots (46-58 mph), and its wooden hull meant it could cross magnetic minefields unharmed. It was better suited to the open sea and had substantially longer range (approximately 700 nautical miles)...

E-Boats were German versions of the American PT boat. They were a little faster at 50 knots and could travel much farther, 700 miles. In 1944, a squadron of E-Boats came across undefended American and British troops practicing for D-Day and launched an attack, killing 1000 American soldiers and a few Brits. In 1956 the British used captured E-boats manned by the same German crews to launch spy missions against the Soviet Union. No E-boats survive today but they were a masterpiece of design.
