LATE BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE - The Cathedral of Monreale, near Palermo, begun 1174 . The exterior of the apse is decorated by blind arcading of small crossed arches in arabesque style. other styles such as Norman and gothic were also used.

"In secular architecture Bernini was important for establishing in the Palazzo Chigi-Odescalchi, begun in 1644, a monumental type of palace facade articulated by giant pilasters above a rusticated ground floor. He developed this influential form in the gigantic project for the completion of the Louvre in Paris."
