Around 970 the westwork (current facade ) was commissioned by Empress Theophano, a Byzantine princess the wife of Emperor Otto II.

CAROLINGIAN & OTTONIAN ARCHITECTURE - Westwork, Abbey of Corvey (873-885, upper stories mid-12th century), Germany. An important innovation of Carolingian churche architecture was the addition of the "westwerk," a tall structure flanked by two towers containing staircases placed at the west end of the building at the nave's entrance. A low entrance hall, precursor to the narthex (or vestibule) of later centuries, supported a large loft above it that opened directly onto the nave.
