As a writer travel is an essential part of the creative process, but there is only so much you can derive from planes, trains and automobiles. So I always try to live as the locals do, and where possible live among the local people. When I settled in West Africa to write it was inevitable I would eschew the fine hotels and luxury apartments in the tourist zone and live as close to local standards as I could without compromising my work.
