Jane & Franklin Pierce had 3 sons. 1 mo before Franklin's 1853 inauguration they lost their last one, 12 yr old Bennie, train accident before their eyes. Jane believed this was God's way of giving her husband more time to devote to the Presidency. For 2 years she refused to come down from the White House 2nd floor, where she spent her days writing letters of apology to Bernie. Jane kept a box with locks of hair of all her dead children. Sleeplessly pacing with her "precious ones". Behind Every Great Man, American First Ladies, William Mckinley, Hair Locks, Great Women, Visual Art
