ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tsuchiya Koitsu (土屋光逸) was an important artist in the Shin-hanga movement. He trained under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika for 19 years, and initially focused on works depicting scenes from the First Sino-Japanese War. In 1931, at the age of 60, he began work for Shōzaburō_Watanabe and his art publishing establishment which also published the work of artists like Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi. Sharaku is considered the most enigmatic genius of all Ukiyo-e artists. His prints suddenly showed up in 1794 and one year later they had disappeared. Nobody knows where this artist came from and what had suddenly happened to him. There are about 140 prints known. The art of ukiyo-e knows many favorite themes. The road system of the Tokaido is such a subject and bijin (beautiful women) is another one. So why not combining both? Kunisada did it, and the result was the Bijin Tokaido. But there is one strange thing. Kunisada made the designs for the beautiful ladies and "borrowed" the landscape background for most designs from another artist, Hiroshige Utagawa I.
