The orion nebula region as captured from my backyard in Austin, Texas last Saturday night. I had been waiting for that perfect moonless night, free of clouds, but it just wasn't happening. The moon was 2/3 full and about 20 degrees away. I couldn't run very long exposures or high iso, but still I think this is my best effort so far. Still a work in progress, but getting there. Imaged with a CLS_CCD filtered canon 7D and 100-400mm lens at 400mm riding piggy back on Meade 8" LX200 classic...

Photographing Orion with a William Optics Fluorostar 132

I attached a DSLR camera to a giant refractor telescope to photograph the Orion Nebula. Here are my early results using the William Optics Fluorostar 132.

The constellation of Orion is rich with impressive nebulas. Of the many interesting details that particularly draws the eye is Barnard's Loop, the bright red circular filament arcing down from the middle. The bright orange star on the upper left is Betelgeuse, while the bright blue star on the lower right is Rigel. Other famous nebulas visible include the Witch Head Nebula, the Flame Nebula, and the comparatively small Horsehead Nebula. NASA-APOD, Stanislav Volskiy.

The Horsehead Nebula in Orion

The easy to identify Horsehead and nearby Flame (or Christmas Tree) nebulae are invisible wonders in what many Australians refer-to as the Saucepan, the base of which, is really Orion's Belt. Everything in this picture is invisible to the unaided eye, except for one or two of the brightest stars. Taken with a 4" Takahashi Apo refractor telescope with f3.7 reducer. f.l = 220mm. SBIG 3.2 megapixel cooled ccd camera with Astrodon RB, Ha and OIII filters. Total Exposure Time: 17.3 hours.
