Placed adjacent to temples of nature and of the fertility god Dionysus, the orchestra was used for dramatic performances, which, together with a procession and sacrifice, composed the annual spring festival of the god. The theatre was first built in the 6th century BCE. Modified and expanded over the centuries, it is the oldest Greek theatre and is the site where some of the most famous Greek plays from antiquity were first performed. Greek theaters had large semicircle amphitheaters for the audience and could be built into a hill. In the center of the amphitheater is an orchestra. Behind the orchestra is the skene which served as a place for actors to change masks and costumes. Passages were also frequently used in Greek theater to aid elaborate entrances and exits for the chorus. Actors in masks. The Greeks used masks that showed emotions in order for the big audiences to see. The emotions were usually angry, sad or funny. Some masks had two sides. The actors also wore big wigs, and padded costumes to look fatter or stronger. Sometimes they even had thick-soled shoes to make them taller.
