This is a great photograph taken in 1919. The picture shows a group of women committing to rather extreme measures in support of the temperance movement. The temperance movement was an effort in the 1910's in the United States to reduce alcohol consumption. It actually led to Prohibition.

Prohibition: Women like this would come together because they were against alcohol and drinking. They would make up mottos like "Lips that touch liquor shall not touch ours", stating that they will have no interest in anybody who drinks.

Susan B. Anthony. Women's rights activist and leader of the women's suffrage movement.

Susan B. Anthony ~ "Susan Brownell Anthony (February 1820 – March was a prominent American civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in the century women's rights movement to introduce women's suffrage into the United States.

Susan B. Anthony (1820 - 1906) was a leader in the women's suffrage movement, but she wasn't a single-issue activist. Less famous, but no less important to her, was her work promoting stronger liquor laws through the temperance movement. As she worked on this issue, it helped shape and inform her later involvement in other social-reform movements like women's suffrage. (Wikimedia Commons)

An extremely rare view of a Ku Klux Klan meeting at night in Union County, Arkansas, in the 1920s. The Klan's resurgence in the 1920s partially stemmed from their role as the extreme militant wing of the temperance movement. In the lawless oil boomtowns they often functioned as vigilantes against vice. Photo courtesy of the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources, Smackover.
