Tranekær Castle stands high above the town. The oldest part is the north wing dates back to 1200. It is built on ruins that are 100-200 years older. Tranekær Castle was part of a chain of defence against attack from the south. The site was well chosen, surrounded as it is by water and lowland areas and with a formidable view of all sides. The castle has been owned by the Ahlefeldt family since 1656.
