Kwan-Yin (Kwannon, jp.) is a female avatar of Avelokitasvara, who is said to have delivered the Heart Sutra. Only 16 sentences in English, the sutra explains why one need have no dualism-based aspirations, including religious pietisms. Yet Kwan-Yin is a representation of compassion. In this pose, for example, she watches over sailors on the stormy sea. The idea is that right doing is best when undertaken without regard for one's own outcomes.
