The thin veneers that make up the layers of plywood are prone to cracking, especially in plywood made from softwood. Moisture escapes the plywood as it ages and the wood shrinks. The small cracks that form in the outer veneer layers are called checking. Another common cause of small cracks is uneven expansion and contraction of the plywood. This problem tends more toward exposed exterior plywood than it does to plywood protected from the weather.
Amazing Painted Floors: A How-to from Carry @ Lovely Etc. -- She was fed up w/ her nasty, stained carpet but didn't have the money to replace it so she painted the plywood subflooring. I am in a similar situation but with a concrete foundation. I have thought about painting it, but this is a more aesthetically pleasing option that I am considering.
